ESP32 platform version 3.3.1 is not appearing in Boards Manager

3 weeks ago v3.3.1 of the ESP32 libraries for Arduino IDE were released yet these are still not being picked up by Arduino IDE. See: https://github.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/releases/tag/3.3.1

To reproduce

Run Arduino IDE, search under Boards Manager for "esp32" and install the package by Espressif Systems.

Expected behavior

It should have picked up version 3.3.1 of the arduino-esp32 libraries but it does not and remains on 3.3.0.

Hi @ardugitter. The Arduino IDE Boards Manager is populated according to the data provided by package index files the IDE downloads from the Internet. Arduino IDE is configured to always use data from a primary package index file that is maintained by the Arduino company.

The "esp32" boards platform is included in the primary package index. However, since the Arduino developers are not directly involved in the maintenance of the "esp32" platform, they don't always notice when a new release of that platform is made, and may take some time to find time to add the new release to the primary package index after noticing. So, unfortunately, there tends to be a delay of some weeks or months between when a release of the "esp32" platform and when it becomes available via the primary package index.

In addition to the primary package index, Arduino IDE also has support for getting data from additional package index files, downloaded from arbitrary URLs specified by the user. The maintainers of the "esp32" boards platform provide their own package index. That index will always contain data for the latest releases. So if you want to have access to the latest release, you only need to add that URL to your Arduino IDE preferences, following the instructions provided in the "esp32" platform documentation:

Since the problem that causes version 3.3.1 of the "esp32" boards platform to not be listed in the Arduino IDE Boards Manager is caused by a file hosted in a separate location, and can not be resolved by any action in this repository, I will close this issue. I have already notified the maintainers of the primary package index of the problem of new "esp32" platform releases not being promptly added to the package index (the issue tracking that problem is in a private repository, so not visible to the general public).

Amazing reply, and specifically thank you for prompting the Arduino people to sort out the slow update of the package index.

Seeing a new esp-idf release, waiting for that to filter through to arduino-ide (usually just a week or two) then waiting for that to filter through to the Arduino IDE program itself is excruciatingly slow.
