Newby with some issues

Hi,

I am new and I have some issues. First of all: GREAT PROJECT!! I really love it.

But I have some issues and questions and hope some of you could help me out. I managed to install the docker container and get it up and running. After start the last seven days are pulled and are shown in Grafana. So far so good.

Now for my issues:

1. I tried to download older data from Garmin as described in the on Docker hub (Section "Historical Data Fetching (Bulk Update)"). This seems to work, at least I get the information day-by-day that the data is loaded and written to the database ("INFO -- Success..." and a "BULK Update Success" at the end of the process). Nonetheless after restarting (docker compose restartthe container, there is no historical data available in Grafana.
2. When I stop the container (docker compose down) and the restarting I need to do the whole configuration (logon with admin/admin and changing the password, selecting the data source and also re-importing the json for the dashboard). It seems to me that the database is not persistent to survive a restart of the container.

Any hints, ideas welcome. If further information is required I am happy to provide them.

Some more info. I am on ubuntu server and I found a similar issue. Seems that the container being created for the bulk update is created and then directly removed (seems also the issue with the docker compose down). So, as far as I understand there are several containers created (and the deleted?). But when I check with docker ps I see only one two containers running (one Garmin-fetch-data and another influxDB and another with Grafana all together in one stack).

If you ask me I would say I did all the steps in the described order.

@sperzelm looks like the issue is it's creating a temporary influxdb container as well - where it writes the data and when the stack goes down, it gets removed as well. It can be tough for you to handle this and fix - because you need to dig quite a lot - and yes there are previous issues on this and this is what was happening there.

if you are using the default compose with docker volumes, they should persist across restarts unless you run docker compose down -v to remove the volumes.

What I suggest, instead of running the docker compose run --rm ..... just add the ENV variables MANUAL_START_DATE and MANUAL_END_DATE in the compose file itself to trigger the bulk update mode automatically when you run docker compose up so it backfills the data. when it's running, open another terminal and run docker ps to check the running containers.

I suspect you ran this part after finishing the docker compose run --rm ..... command because them the container got removed already and you are supposed to have only the running one - which is expected!

@arpanghosh8453 thanks a lot for the quick answer. Just tried to follow up with the issue and removed everything (docker compose down --rmi all -v --remove-orphans). Also removed the garminconnect-tokens.json.
When starting again I get a 429 - IP rate limited from Garmin and cannot access (at least not via garmin-fetch-data, login directly from the machin into Garmin Connect Portal works fine). Seems I need to wait some time until Garmin removes the rate limit.

Thanks for the hint to include the MANUAL_xxx_DATE environment variables into the compose.yaml. This might work as a workaround, but means each time I update the containers, the whole data would be fetched anew.

So I will see, how far I get. So far thanks a lot, will follow up here as soon as I find out new things.

@sperzelm What I meant is temporarily change those values, bulk fetch, and go back to original configuration for regular incremental fetching
