A workshop for artificial intelligence. Tools, protocols, published thinking.
Protocols. Open agreements about how AI tooling should be structured so that things interoperate. The first protocol is Synod, a coordination protocol for clusters of AI agents that deliberate, decide, and learn together.
Tools. Concrete programs that an operator can install and run. Tools implement protocols. They are opinionated where the protocols are general.
Configurations. Pre-assembled clusters of agents and tools, ready for a particular kind of work. A configuration for a single developer working alone. A configuration for a small team.
Published thinking. What we learn by building, we write down. Essays, technical notes, post-mortems, design rationales. Released under permissive licenses.
The work is governed by seven principles, in order of weight:
- The harness, not the model. We build the structure around models. We do not train foundation models.
- The work survives the worker. Built for the decade, not the news cycle.
- The mark of the maker. Every artifact carries its maker's name.
- Small workshop, sharp tools. Growth is not a virtue in itself.
- The apprentice is welcome. Documented as if for someone who walked in this morning.
- Failure is catalogued. Mistakes recorded with the same care as successes.
- The operator owns their work. Their data, their decisions, their tools.

We are not the first to build machines that build machines. We claim ancestors: the Hellenistic engineers of Alexandria, the medieval guilds, Vaucanson, Babbage and Lovelace, the Bauhaus, Bell Labs in its great period, Xerox PARC, the early Free Software Foundation. We do not claim equivalence. We claim membership in the same craft.
