Now that we have an itest framework, I would also like a unit test framework.
I would like to make more PRs for some of the error conditions that can happen, but I want to have more confidence that my changes work, without making the itest suite enormous.
This adds a place for this, and starts it off with verifying the existing behavior of the
_checkmethod.
