Throughout my IT career I have taken the Hard Path; hard UNIX sysadmin skills, hard Network Engineering skills. I've been lucky enough to have developed some soft skills too. A lot of talk nowadays is about so-called "Rock Star" engineers - which sounds wonderful until you realise that perhaps not everyone wants to work with people who trash their environment and throw television sets out the window on a regular basis.
As I approach 50, I realise that the skills which differenciate me from my peers are both hard and soft - and I began to wonder what my career would have been like if I'd put as many skill points into the soft skills tree as the hard skills tree.
