Ensure all code copied from the aspnetcore repo has the proper license and copyright notices

To be compatible with the aspnetcore license (apache 2), the files that are copied from that repo or Steves testing prototype needs to have the proper copyright notice and somehow source license associated with them.

Currently, I believe it is only the Htmlizer.cs file that falls under this category.

If anybody know the right way to be compliant, i'd appreciate the help.

@danroth27 I am pretty close to getting the v1 version out the door, and want to check this box before I do.

As mentioned above, its only the Htmlizer.cs that is based of a file from the aspnetcore repo. Can you point me in the right direction of what I need to do, to be compliant license-wise in this case?

Hi @egil. The license for the ASP.NET Core repo is here: https://github.com/dotnet/aspnetcore/blob/main/LICENSE.txt. I believe you need to comply with the redistribution requirements specified in the 4th section.

Thanks Dan. I'm not great at parsing those things, or rather, it's not really clear how to do what section 4 asks of me.

• Include the license file from aspnetcore repo? I guess that doesn't mean replace my own. So should it be named something differently and perhaps placed on a different folder?
• Is the right approach to add a NOTICE.md file and references aspnetcore's license in that and the affected file (s)?
• Do I need to add a more explicit comment at the top of the affected file or is it enough what is already there?

I wish I could help more here, but I'm not a lawyer so I can't really give advise on interpreting the license. But this is a pretty common OSS license so there should be some good resources out there to help you figure this out.

I've done my best to add some notices and copied the license over into a NOTICE.md file in the linked commit.

When I apply for a .NET Foundation membership, hopefully the smart folks there can help amend this, if needed.
