OAuth Application eating up all my API usage?

I just noticed that the shields.io OAuth Application seems to be using more of my API "allowance" then usual. This never seems to have been a problem, but now it goes over the 5000/hour quite a lot. I had to remove the app for now to stop it from using up everything:

The used number was going up quite fast (about 100 per 10 seconds) before I removed the application from my account.

Is there something wrong with the shields.io application or did GitHub change something on how the rate limit is calculated?!?

Thank you for sharing, To reduce confusion I have created and pinned an issue #11912.
We are aware of an ongoing issues with Github Auth for a few days, but it seems that it took some time to reach users.
