Request to release "pending" `eth_call` support for Flashblocks

Hi base team, base/base@3c15908 adds support for eth_call to the Flashblocks client. We would like to start using this feature officially and allowing third-party providers to upgrade their nodes. If there is a release schedule already being followed, can you share when the next release is planned?

It is still a WIP, will not be released until base/base#48 is merged which is currently awaiting a new release of reth

I wasn't aware of that tracking issue, thanks for linking it here. However, I'd still like to request that the changes in base/base@3c15908 be released in a new point version here. The support for pending eth_call is available and functional without any further reth releases (we run nodes I cut from that commit in our infra). I believe this is a valuable feature to front end applications that would like do things like computing an erc20 balance using flashblocks/subblock information to improve their UX, etc.

Otherwise, can we talk about an ETA for base/base#48? If we expect the work to take a while, that is fine, but we will probably end up having to convince node providers to run a version we cut ourselves in order to enable this feature for our front-end applications.

We want to get it out ASAP as well but the other PR is blocked by a bug we fixed in reth and we need them to cut a new release (sometime this week). Then we can test on sepolia and publish an official release here

Let me bring up your requirements internally though and see if we can do a minor optional release to unblock you. I'll get back tomorrow

note that the current version of eth_call you linked is working but doesn't support user-specified state overrides so doesn't fully adhere to the json rpc method spec, which is part of what the pending PR fixes (along w/ adding eth_estimateGas and eth_simulateV1)

Since the reth release/bug fix only affects eth_estimateGas, I will update the PR tomorrow to remove eth_estimateGas from that PR and do it separately later. Will get it merged and start testing on Sepolia, and then we can cut a base/node release here in a day or so once we're confident of its workings on Sepolia

I don't think we should cut a release until base/base#59 is fixed. We're aiming for end of August to have support for the additional RPC's.

As you're already running this commit, two questions:

• Is it urgent to have this in a point release?
• Do you see the error logs linked in the issue? Specifically Unable to execute flashblocks transactions. Eth call override is empty

Although our infrastructure runs node-reth cut at the aforementioned commit, our node providers only run official versions of node and node-reth. I believe it is urgent to have this in a point release sooner than the end of the month so that those node providers can update their nodes to an official version and our frontend applications can take advantage of the feature. Our only alternative here is to convince our partners to upgrade nodes for our chain to a version we cut ourselves.

That error log is problematic as it means eth call isnt working perfectly yet in case new block flashblocks start coming in before previous canonical block has been inserted. We definitely need to fix that before an official release.

I'm going to close this out for now, we're aiming for end of August (have a couple of bugs to fix). Personally would recommend you don't run that commit as whenever you see that error it'll stop processing Flashblocks until the next block
