Boundaries, in software, are usually Protocols for exchanging data. Adapters can also be considered boundaries.

In FifteenFundamentalProperties, ChristopherAlexander identifies boundaries as a property of living structure. In that View, a boundary is a Center that supports another by bounding it: both separating it from its Context and strengthening it by reinforcing its shape.
