SemiPublicSpace

Semi-public spaces are a social DesignPattern (or perhaps, a meta-pattern?) that facilitates authenticity, friendship, and individuality. They can form the middle of an IntimacyGradient. I wrote a Pattern for one type of semi-public space here: https://github.com/software-patterns/workshop/blob/master/patterns/computer-places.md

ChristopherAlexander's book APatternLanguage contains some patterns for physical SemiPublicSpaces—e.g. HalfHiddenGarden, PrivateTerraceOnTheStreet, and Alcove.

In the digital realm, the FacebookWall feature of 2007 or so was a semi-public space. Wall posts had the benefit of being clearly addressed to a specific person, and not visible within some larger forum—yet they were still (by default) readable by friends of the people involved. And there was no way for other people to nose in with threaded comments—if they wanted to participate, they'd have to do so by making a wall post of their own. This felt like a pretty good approximation of one-on-one in-person conversation in a public space—my preferred mode of interaction as a highschooler.
