Hardening

  • The update check can no longer be broken by SpliceCraft's own success. The previous fix raised the size limit on PyPI's metadata so it wouldn't be hit again for thousands of releases — but a hard limit on an ever-growing file is always a deadline. Now, if a response is ever too large (or arrives garbled), the check recovers the version from the start of the response instead of giving up, so the "is there an update?" question keeps working no matter how big the metadata grows. The size limit stays as a pure safety guard against a hostile or misconfigured server.
  • A failed update check now tells you what actually went wrong. Previously every failure — unreachable network, an over-large response, an unreadable one — printed the same "Could not reach PyPI", which sent people to debug a connection that was perfectly fine (this was the surface symptom of the v1.0.37 bug). splicecraft update now gives a distinct message for each cause and always says "PyPI itself is reachable" when that's true, and the logs/diagnostic bundle record the response size on every check plus the precise reason on any failure — so a recurrence is visible as a trend long before it's a problem.
