Nineteenth-Century Knowledge Project

Machine-readable transcriptions of historical editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica

Transcribing text from four editions:

  • 3rd ed. 18 vols. + 2 suppl. vols. Edinburgh: A. Bell and C. MacFarquhar, 1788-1797.
  • 7th ed. 21 vols. Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1830-1842.
  • 9th ed. 25 vols. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1875-1889.
  • 11th ed. 29 vols. NY: Cambridge University Press, 1910-1911.

Planned formats: TEI, TXT, HTML

Updates

1-Nov-2022: v1.0 of text for 9th edition is now in 9th edition directory.

7-Oct-2022: v1.1 of text for 7th edition is now in 7th edition directory.

4-Oct-2022: The TXT version of the complete 7th edition (v1.0) is now available in the eb07 directory.
