v0.1.4 — the feedback round

Built almost entirely from the beta-thread feedback (TalkBass, r/BassGuitar, r/VSTi). No new sounds — everything here improves what was already there.

Fixed

  • Fuzz no longer jumps in volume — engaging FUZZ was 11–16 dB louder than clean; the fuzz path is now loudness-matched per strip, so the button changes character, not volume. Old sessions are migrated automatically. (Note: sessions saved with FX faders very high may come back slightly quieter — the migration caps at the +12 dB fader max. Worth a quick listen to old mixes.)
  • Zipper noise eliminated — all controls (faders, pans, mutes, solos, input/output, glue) now ramp smoothly while playing instead of stepping.
  • Spectrum display low end — the stair-stepping below 500 Hz was a display-resolution artifact, not signal; the analyzer now matches what your DAW's analyzers show. It also behaves correctly at low sample rates.
  • macOS standalone app icon — no more generic placeholder.

New

  • A/B button on the DI strip — instantly audition your raw DI against the full processed stack, click-free.
  • Spectrum views — the FREQ button cycles OFF / ALL / PRE (DI, grey) / POST (processed, cyan), so you can see exactly what the plugin adds.
  • SYS panel — live CPU, latency, sample rate, buffer size, host and OS, with one-click COPY for bug reports.
  • Update notice — the plugin now tells you when a newer version is out (checks the public releases feed at most once a day; nothing about you or your audio is ever sent).
  • README gained a tech FAQ (signal flow, glue spec, oversampling, latency, CPU) and a plain-English glossary.

Changed

  • SUB and DI strips no longer have pan — they stay dead centre by design (the DI strip carries the A/B button instead). Sessions that panned them will reload centred.

Bugs and requests → issues. Enjoying it? Tip jar.

Bass Better-er v0.1.3

Fixed

  • Extreme distortion in GarageBand (and any host using live input monitoring). The convolution engine was fed stale buffer data whenever the host rendered audio in blocks smaller than the maximum it announced — which is exactly what GarageBand and Logic do while you play through a record-armed track. Every cab channel garbled; only the DI strip stayed clean. Playback/bounce was never affected, which is why this slipped past validation. Huge thanks to the GarageBand user who reported it and helped narrow it down.
  • Standalone app crashed when opening Bluetooth MIDI settings on recent macOS (missing privacy usage description).
  • Garbled characters in the UI ("Save current…" in the preset menu).

Improved

  • The plugin window now shows a resize grip in the bottom-right corner — it was always resizable (drag to zoom the whole UI, aspect-locked), just invisible.

Updating from an earlier version

Just download and run the installer for your platform again — it replaces the old version in place. Then restart your DAW so it picks up the new build (macOS: the installer is ad-hoc signed, so right-click → Open if Gatekeeper complains).

Platform Download
macOS (AU + VST3, universal) Bass-Better-er-macOS.dmg

Added

  • Linux VST3 build (Bass-Better-er-Linux-VST3.zip).
  • Standalone app downloads for all three platforms (…-Standalone.zip) — run Bass Better-er without a DAW.
  • CI now runs pluginval against the Linux VST3; README gained exact per-platform install paths.

No changes to the audio engine — the macOS and Windows plugins are functionally identical to v0.1.1.

⚠️ Known issue, fixed in v0.1.3: extreme distortion when playing live through a record-armed track (GarageBand/Logic input monitoring). Please use v0.1.3 or later.

Bass Better-er v0.1.1

First public release of Bass Better-er — drop it on a bass DI channel and it rebuilds the DI into the Box of Rules multi-mic tone stack: eight measured cab-IR channels (subs, clean bands, fuzz-capable FX mics, room pair) with per-channel level/mute/solo/pan/phase, fuzz on the LO FX channels, glue compression on the sum, factory + user presets, and a spectrum analyzer.

Downloads

Platform Download
macOS (AU + VST3, universal Intel/Apple Silicon) Bass-Better-er-macOS.dmg
Windows 64-bit (VST3) Bass-Better-er-Windows.exe

Both installers ask you to accept the no-liability terms. The macOS installer is ad-hoc signed (not notarized) — right-click → Open if Gatekeeper complains.

⚠️ Known issue, fixed in v0.1.3: extreme distortion when playing live through a record-armed track (GarageBand/Logic input monitoring). Please use v0.1.3 or later.
