Installation Guide
Warning
This method works for everyone, but is most recommended for users with newer Samsung TVs running Tizen OS 8.0 or higher.
Samsung TV SDK is a set of tools for developing applications for Samsung TV, using Tizen. To work with Samsung TV SDK, you need to install Tizen Studio IDE, Samsung TV Extensions and Samsung Certificate Extension on your system.
Note
If you have already installed Samsung TV SDK on your Windows PC system, then you can skip the below steps.
- Download and run the Tizen Studio installer.
- In the
Installer:- Accept the software license statement by clicking the
Acceptbutton. - Set the SDK and data location (leave as default) and click the
Installbutton to start installing the required packages and tools in the specified directory. - After the installation is complete, open the
Package Managerby checking theLaunch the Package Managerbox before clicking theFinishbutton.

- In the
Package Manager:- Select the
Extension SDKtab and findTV Extensions-X.XandSamsung Certificate Extensionwhich are the required extensions. - Click the
Installbutton for both extensions and accept the software license statement by clicking theAcceptbutton. - After the extensions have been successfully installed, close the
Package Managerby clicking theXbutton at the top of the window.

- If you want to continue with other steps, then launch the
Tizen Studioby checking theLaunch the Tizen Studiobox before clicking theOKbutton. - You may be prompted to select a directory as the workspace (leave as default) and launch the
Tizen Studioby checking theUse this as the default and do not ask againbox before clicking theLaunchbutton.

If you have already installed Tizen Studio and the required extensions, you can continue to import the existing Tizen project into Tizen Studio by selecting the root directory or uploading an archive file.
- In the
Tizen Studiomenu:- Go to the
Filetab and selectImportto open the import wizard.
- Go to the
- In the
Importwindow:- Open
Tizenand selectTizen Projectas import source and click theNextbutton.
- Open
- Under
Select Directory / Filesection:- Select the
Archive fileoption to import the project from the archive file and click theBrowsebutton. - Find the downloaded file
Moonlight.wgt(e.g. which you can get from the Release tab) and click theNextbutton.
- Select the
- Under
Select Projectsection:- Select a Tizen TV profile
tv-samsungand versionX.Xfrom theProfileandVersiondrop-down menus for theMoonlightproject. - Then select the check box for the
Moonlightproject to prepare it for import and click theFinishbutton.
- Select a Tizen TV profile
- Now the selected
Moonlightproject has been imported into your workspace.

After you have imported the Moonlight project, then you need to enable the Developer mode and connect your Samsung TV to your computer using Device Manager which is a tool within Tizen Studio. So this allows you to run and install the application on a TV device for development.
- Enable the
Developer modeon your Samsung TV:- Go to the
Appspanel and press12345on the remote, then a dialog should popup. - Set
Developer modetoOn, then enter your computer's IP address in theHost PC IPfield. - Restart the TV by holding the power button, then go to the
Appspanel. - Depending on your model, a
DEVELOP MODEwill appear in theAppspanel at the top of the screen.

- Get the
TV IP Addresson your Samsung TV:- Go to the
Settingspanel, then go to theGeneralsection. - Select the
Networkmenu, then selectNetwork Statusand click theIP Settingsbutton. - Now you can get the IP address from the
IP Addressfield.
- Go to the
- In the
Tizen Studiomenu:- Go to the
Toolstab and selectDevice Managerto open the device manager.
- Go to the
- In the
Device Managerwindow:- Select
Remote Device Managerand click+to add a TV device. - Under the
Add Devicewindow, enterSamsung TVin theNamefield and enter the IP address of your Samsung TV in theIPfield. - Then it is recommended to leave the
Portfield untouched and click theAddbutton. - Under the
Remote Device Managerwindow, select the TV from the list and switch the connection toOnand click theClosebutton.
- Select
- Once you have successfully connected the TV with
Device Manager, closeDevice Managerby clicking theXbutton at the top of the window.

After completing the previous steps, you need to create and sign the certificate profile in order to run the application on your Samsung TV. This step is essential for signing the application for development and distribution.
Note
Before proceeding further with creating and signing the certificate profile, you must have already imported the Moonlight app, enabled developer mode, and connected your target TV device.
- In the
Tizen Studiomenu:- Go to the
Toolstab and selectCertificate Managerto open the certificate wizard. - You may be prompted to select a profile file for import, so you should click the
Cancelbutton in theMigration for Certificate Profiledialog.
- Go to the
- In the
Certificate Managerwindow:- Click
+in theCertificate Profileand selectSamsungas certificate profile type.
- Click
- Under
Device Typesection:- Select
TVas the device type and click theNextbutton.
- Select
- Under
Certificate Profilesection:- Enter
Moonlightin theCreate a new certificate profilefield and click theNextbutton.
- Enter
- Under
Author Certificatesection:- Select
Create a new author certificateoption and click theNextbutton. - Enter
Moonlightin theAuthor namefield andMgs12345in bothPasswordfields. - Ensure the
Apply the same password for the distributor certificatebox is checked before clicking theNextbutton. - You will be asked to sign in with your
Samsung Account, so you need to click theOKbutton. - After successful login, you can close the browser window and continue to the
Certificate Managerwindow. - Then you need to define a certificate backup path for your certificate file in the
Backup pathfield (e.g. C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Tizen Certificate Backup) and click theNextbutton.
- Select
- Under
Distributor Certificatesection:- Select
Create a new distributor certificateand click theNextbutton. - Set the privilege level to
Publicand leave thePasswordfields untouched. - Select the
Add individual DUIDsoption, then theDevice ID(DUID) for the target device will be added automatically, because you have already connected the TV withDevice Manager, so you need to continue by clicking theNextbutton. - After completing the distributor certificate, you can close the certificate profile creation wizard by clicking the
Finishbutton. - A new dialog will appear with the message telling you that your new certificate profile has been successfully created and set as active, so you need to click the
OKbutton.
- Select
- After you have successfully added and signed the
Moonlightcertificate profile, close theCertificate Managerby clicking theClosebutton.

If you have completed all the previous steps, then you can install the Moonlight app on the target device. This step is important to install and launch the application on the connected device.
Note
Before proceeding further with the installation of the Moonlight app, you must have already completed the previous steps, as well as created and signed your certificate profile.
- Ensure you have enabled
Developer modeand the TV is already connected usingDevice Managerbefore proceeding further. - In the
Project Explorerview:- Right-click on the
Moonlightproject, then go toRun Asand selectTizen Web Applicationas the launch mode.
- Right-click on the
- The installation process will start after a few seconds, so you should wait until it is finished. After that, close
Tizen Studioby going toFiletab and selectExitoption. - Now the
Moonlightapp will automatically open on the target device and can be found underRecent Appson your Samsung TV.

Warning
This method is recommended for users with older Samsung TVs running Tizen OS 5.5 to 7.0.
WSL 2 is the default distro type when installing a Linux distribution and uses virtualization technology to run a Linux kernel inside of a lightweight utility virtual machine (VM). This step is essential for running Docker Desktop because it enables executing Linux containers on Windows PC through the native WSL 2 Linux kernel.
Note
If you have already installed WSL 2 on your Windows PC system, then you can skip the below steps.
- Open the
Startmenu, typeWindows Featuresin the search bar, and clickTurn Windows features on or offfrom the search results, and theWindows Featureswindow will open:- Find the
Windows Subsystem for LinuxandVirtual Machine Platformfeatures and enable both by checking the boxes. - After enabling the required features, click the
OKbutton and restart your system.

- Open the
Startmenu, typeWindows PowerShellin the search bar, and right-clickWindows PowerShellfrom the search results and selectRun as administrator.- You may be prompted by
User Account Control(UAC), so you need to clickYesto allow it to run with administrative privileges.

Windows PowerShellwindow:- Enter command
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestartto enableWindows Subsystem for Linuxfeature, then restart your system. - After that, enter command
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestartto enableVirtual Machine Platformfeature, then restart your system again.
- Enter command
- Now you need to download the latest
WSL 2Linux kernel update package here:- Double-click on
wsl_update_x64.msito run the installer, then you will be prompted for elevated permissions, where you must selectYesto approve this installation. - Once the installation is complete, proceed to the next step by running
Windows PowerShellwith administrative privileges. - After that, enter the command
wsl --set-default-version 2to setWSL 2as the default version when installing a new Linux distribution.
- Double-click on
- Alternatively, you can download
WSL 2from theMicrosoft Storewhich has more frequent updates using the commandwsl.exe --install, then you can update theWSL 2package using the following commandwsl.exe --updateunder theWindows PowerShellwindow, but still the first option is more recommended. - You have successfully installed
WSL 2and now you can install your favorite Linux distribution.

Docker Desktop is an easy-to-install application for your Mac, Windows or Linux environment that enables you to build and share containerized applications and microservices. This step is important to build or use the pre-built Docker image to install the application on the connected device.
Note
Before proceeding further with installing Docker Desktop as your preferred Linux distribution, you should already have WSL 2 installed on your Windows PC.
- Download and run the Docker Desktop installer.
- In the
Installer:- Under
Configurationsection, select theUse WSL 2 instead of Hyper-VandAdd shortcut to desktopoptions. - Click the
OKbutton and follow the instructions in the installation wizard to authorize the installer and continue. - When the installation is complete, click the
Close and restartbutton to complete the installation process by closing the installer and restarting the system.
- Under
- Open
Docker Desktop, then a new window will appear asDocker Subscription Service Agreement", then you need to click theAccept` button to continue. - Now
Docker Desktopwill start normally and then you can skip creating an account to useDockeras it is optional. - Open
Docker Desktop, then a new window will display theDocker Subscription Service Agreement, then you need to click theAcceptbutton to continue openingDocker Desktop.

If you have completed all the previous steps, then you can install the Moonlight app on the target device. This step is important to install the application using the pre-built Docker image and launch it on the connected device.
Note
Before proceeding further with the installation of the Moonlight app, you must already have WSL 2 and Docker Desktop installed on your Windows PC.
- Enable the

Windows PowerShellor a similar terminal depending on your OS, then enter the following command to pull the pre-built Docker image:docker pull ghcr.io/ndriqimlahu/moonlight-tizen:master- This operation may take a while, please be patient.
- After that, in
Windows PowerShell, enter the following command to run and enter the container:docker run -it --rm ghcr.io/ndriqimlahu/moonlight-tizen:master - After that, in
Windows PowerShell, follow the steps below to install the application on your TV:- Enter the following command to connect to your Samsung TV over
SDB(Smart Development Bridge):
sdb connect YOUR_TV_IPNote: Replace
YOUR_TV_IPwithIP Addressof your TV.- Next, enter the following command to confirm that you are connected, then take note of the Device ID:
sdb devicesNote: Just to clarify Device ID will be the last column, something like
UE55AU7172UXXH.- Next, enter the following command to install the package:
tizen install -n Moonlight.wgt -t YOUR_DEVICE_IDNote: Replace
YOUR_DEVICE_IDwithDevice IDof your TV.- Next, enter the following command to exit the container:
exitNote: Moonlight should now be available under
Recent Appson your Samsung TV. - Enter the following command to connect to your Samsung TV over
- Finally, in
Windows PowerShell, enter the following command to remove the Docker image, as it is no longer needed:docker image rm ghcr.io/ndriqimlahu/moonlight-tizen:masterNote: At the end you can enter the
exitcommand to close theWindows PowerShellwindow. - (Optional) Disable the
Developer modeon your Samsung TV:- Go to the
Appspanel and press12345on the remote, then a dialog should popup. - Set
Developer modetoOffand then click theOKbutton to close the dialog. - Restart the TV by holding the power button, then go to the
Appspanel. - Depending on your model, a
DEVELOP MODEwill disappear from theAppspanel at the top of the screen.
- Go to the
Warning
This method is the fastest and most accessible way to install the app. However, it is a temporary solution because the installed app will expire after 30 days. You will need to reinstall it using a new USB package generated from the latest pre-release version.
This section guides you through installing the Moonlight app on your Samsung TV using the generated USB package and launch it on the device.
Note
Before proceeding, ensure your USB drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, as these are the formats supported by Samsung TVs for app installation.
- Download the
MoonlightUSB.zipfile from the latest pre-release. - Extract the contents of the ZIP file to the root directory of your USB drive.
- Verify the folder structure on the USB drive is as follows:
root/ └── userwidget/ └── app.tmg └── widget.license - Insert the USB drive into a USB port on your Samsung TV.
- Wait for the app to install automatically (this may take a moment).
- Once installed, the Moonlight app should appear under
Recent Appson your Samsung TV.
