Haridwar, located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, is a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus. Situated on the banks of the holy River Ganges, it is known for its sacred bathing ghats and religious ceremonies. The city is home to numerous ancient temples, including the renowned Har Ki Pauri. Haridwar also hosts the Kumbh Mela, a massive religious festival held every 12 years, attracting millions of devotees. With its spiritual ambiance and cultural significance, Haridwar offers a unique and enriching experience for visitors.

Purpose: The purpose of this illustrated schematic map is to provide users with a clearer understanding of various tourist destinations in and around Haridwar, encompassing traditional markets, temples, scenic spots, and more. Its aim is to assist users in navigating and exploring these attractions effectively.

Mental Model

Having resided in Haridwar for more than a decade, I sketched a mental model of the prominent tourist destinations. I have also included their surroundings and essential road connections. This diagram serves as a visual aid to navigate the city's key attractions effectively.

I used google maps to mark important features like National Highways, Tourist spots, River canals, etc.

Prior to plotting on the grid, I tried to conceptualize the optimal routes linking major tourist destinations in Haridwar. By envisioning these pathways, I aimed to construct a geometric shape that would assist me in creating an organized grid plot for the city.

Abstraction, Simplification, Adding Visual Heirarchy, Icons & Legend

I utilized grid abstraction to enhance the clarity and organization of roadways and landmarks, resulting in a more user-friendly and navigable map. By aligning the traced map horizontally and eliminating unnecessary roads and pathways, I simplified the layout. The focus was to retain only minimal information that would facilitate easy navigation for tourists. To establish visual hierarchy, I differentiated national highways and main streets from regular roads. Furthermore, I incorporated icons, legends, and other relevant details to ensure quick comprehension and usability for users of the map.

A Foodie's Guide to Park Street

Purpose

Park Street is one of the most iconic streets in Kolkata, and it has long been a popular destination for foodies. The street is home to a wide variety of restaurants, from casual eateries to fine dining establishments. In recent years, Park Street has become even more popular, as new restaurants have opened and the old favorites have continued to thrive.

I wanted to design a map which would be helpful for the foodies to get an idea of what are the famous eateries and where to find them.

Target Audience

• Kolkata residents who are looking for new restaurants to try
• Tourists who are visiting Kolkata and want to experience the city's best food

Tracing relevant aspects from maps

I first looked at the map and tried to label the eateries that are

2. Heritage Restaurants
3. Any popular joints
4. Landmarks

Then I traced the paths on top of the maps and sketched the labels

I tried to sketch the same maps now with an added level of simplification with the help of a grid

Adding visual hierarchy and aesthetics

I tried adding a visual hierarchy and increase the clarity of my map. Unnecessary elements have been removed to make the map uncluttered and minimalistic. The sizing and spacing of each element are done proportionately.

Labelling, adding/removing some elements and giving final touches

The map has been labelled and a legend has been added. The icons and the color coding of each element has been chosen carefully which maximizes the purpose of the map.

Tourist's Day Out In Kolkata

Target Audience

The target audience for this schematic map are the following:

• Tourists visiting the city, wishing to visit historical monuments in Kolkata in a short period of time
• A person who lives in Kolkata, wanting to plan an itinerary for their day out in the heart of the city

Purpose

Kolkata, is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical monuments left by the British during the colonial era.
Central and South Kolkata are areas with most of these points of interest.
The purpose for this schematic map is to provide guidance to tourists new to the city as well as residents who wish to tour as many places they can in day, possibly availing public transport on major roads or our North-South Metro Line. Major shopping areas in the vicinity have also been mentioned should they want to collect souveniers as well as iconic eateries.

At first, I have decided upon the scale, I wish to use and cropped out the central region I wish to highlight.

Abstraction: Grids & geometric shapes

1. At first, I have used a 45degree grid as a reference and more or less accurately outlined the major roads to be used.

2. Next, I have added some more points of interest and drawn the monuments in three categories:

• Yellow - Monument / Temple
• Green - Momument marked by large green parks
• Blue - Free flowing rivers or aquariums or ghats

3. Finally, I removed the grid and the underlying map. Also added the label and drawn the N-S Metro Line in red.

Simplification and Minimal look

To make the schematic diagram visually simple, and to not confuse the viewer, I have straightened up the lines and used box like structures.

Nestled at the foothills of the picturesque Shivalik Range, Chandigarh stands as a vibrant testament to modern urban planning and design. The capital city of both Punjab and Haryana states in India, Chandigarh is renowned for its harmonious blend of urban development, verdant landscapes, and cultural richness. Designed by renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, along with his team of architects, the city exudes a unique charm with its clean lines, spacious boulevards, and meticulously planned sectors. Chandigarh's reputation as a city that seamlessly combines nature and modernity has made it a popular destination for tourists from around the world.

Among the various attractions that Chandigarh offers, I have chosen to focus on Sector 17 and Sukhna Lake region as tourist locations. Sector 17, often referred to as the "heart" of Chandigarh, is a bustling commercial hub that showcases the city's architectural grandeur. Sukhna Lake, located at the foothills of the Shivalik Range, is another prominent tourist spot in Chandigarh.

Purpose

Nagpur metro is a rapid transit system for the city Nagpur, Maharashtra which began operation with 2 lines, Blue and Orange. The construction is still ongoing for other lines, because of this several stations have undergone changes during the construction process.

As a result, some of the existing maps available to the public are outdated and incorrect, making it confusing for commuters to navigate the metro system. By creating an updated map, I aimed to provide a clear and accurate representation of the Nagpur Metro, reflecting the current status of changes.

Scale, Audience & Purpose

Purpose : Hyderabad is a popular tourist destination. Its known for historical monuments like charminar, but a lot of tourists alos like to see the more modern side of the city. With wide roads and cycle tracks (in some parts), cycling is a great way to get around the modern part of Hyderabad.
To help tourists cycle around some interesting areas in modern Hyderabad, a cycle track was developed specifically the area covering, HITEC city and Gachibowli, all while crossing hyderabad's cable bridge on Durgam cheruvu.
Scale : Areas in Hyderabad consisting on Gachibowli, Hitech City, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothaguda.
Audience : Tourists interested in Cycling through modern hyderabad

• Nirma University is located on the outskirts of the Ahmedabad district in Gujarat boasting a HUGE campus
• The campus includes multiple grounds, classrooms buildings, workshops, canteens, hostels and other stores and facilities.
• Due to the large campus size, I have decided to focus solely on a smaller but the most important area in the campus
• The selected area has multiple classrooms and the workshop buildings, hostels, in-campus pharmacy, etc.

TARGET AUDIENCE and PURPOSE:

• Students just enrolled in the University and trying to find where the Hostel and classrooms are.
• Parents or visiting relatives to get an overall orientation of where what is and how to reach them.
• Vising students from other colleges for fests and such wondering where the the Blocks are located.

PLEASE NOTE:

• I have used OSM open maps services instead of the Google maps services
• I have done multiple steps, but am only displaying 5-6 of them in this comment
  • This is done so as to not occupy space and avoid giving redundant information.
  • For example, there are intermediate steps with just girds+roads or just roads+maps
  • But I am not including those intermediate steps so as to give a short and quick answer
