different account types: local/ online service

on first start the user can select an online service or create local account.
(sync feeds/ read/ unread)

I'm not sure if someone needs 2 accounts/ services (for example private and work account). I havn't seen this in any reader so far...

That is an interesting suggestion, and one I have been toying with in my head. On one hand I would like to keep it as simple as possible with as little reliance on 3rd party companies, as implementing services means I will have to be able to sync FROM that service to my own storage database that is on the device, but it is also nice to have your starred articles available from online and other devices.

Out of that list, unfortunately Feed.ly is no longer taking API access requests, so that is out of the picture regardless of what we decide about support for 3rd party services.

What are your thoughts on this? Personally, creating a system that backs up to Google Drive and can be synced between your devices seems to be both the most feasible and least reliant on other services

I have 1 Android phone, 1 Windows PC and 1 Windows tablet.

When I check reddit for new posts I do this on my phone because for me it's much more comfortable than using the reddit website. Also I don't need that data synced - it's no important data for me.

For RSS I'm using theoldreader.com (I was using google reader before) as online service so I can read them on all 3 devices. I use my phone on the go or to filter (mark them as read) articles very fast - I prefer watching videos or reading bigger artices on the bigger devices.

Google drive sync is no option for me because I only use the browser (+extension for notification) on the windows devices.

About downtimes of 3rd party services: I'm using theoldreader for almost 4 years now and it's very realiable. Seldom it has small downtimes.
Also I wouldn't move to another service atm...
