Secret of Video

Secret of Video is a game originally developed as a university project, made [REDACTED] years ago in the PlayStation (that is, PS1) release of RPG Maker. It was originally created for a Video class, which partially explains the title. Some years later I remade the project in Flash. Even more years later, I have ported that project to Godot. This is that.

I have written up high-level discussions of both ports: RPG Maker to Flash and Flash to Godot.

The game is filled mostly with in-jokes and meta-level humor, and as such probably won't be enjoyable to most players. It is presented mainly as a curio and as a portfolio piece.

For the move to Godot, I found it prudent to alter the original project in a number of ways. First, I got rid of all copyrighted material and replaced it with original or open-license assets; second, I changed the names of characters, who were based on real people. The conversion hasn't been 100% completed as of this writing; most notably, some graphic assets were replaced with placeholders.

The file LICENSE covers the work itself; licenses.txt contains a list of third-party material and their licenses.

The repository contains some of the original Flash code, mostly as a sort of tribute to and artifact of the past, and to provide curious spelunkers with a peek at how the conversion was done. Unfortunately, it does not contain the .fla files.

The game ostensibly supports inputs for both keyboard/mouse and standard gamepads. It's not going to run fullscreen unless you have a tiny screen. Some things just need to be old-school, you know?

You can theoretically build the game yourself using the .Net version of Godot 4.3 plus Visual Studio 2022 or later, but a Windows release should be available in the Releases section of the repo.
