Investigate and correct (if necessary) warnings from initial run of MuseDev #131

Describe the bug
We recently enabled MuseDev's static analysis tool on the repository. Investigate whether any of the identified issues are actual bugs, and correct if necessary. Additionally, make any code improvements motivated by the MuseDev report (e.g., eliminating any warnings generated by ErrorProne).
