"fields" partial responses support

This limitation is documented, but is there any timeline for putting it back it in the v2 framework?
From the currently missing features, it is the most useful one: it allows API consumers to limit the bandwidth usage and roundtrip time when fetching a lot of entities with many fields, with only a few useful ones.
If this is not implemented in the near term, would it be possible to remove "fields" from the default parameters in the discovery files so the API consumers don't expect this to work anymore when using the API explorer?
