Summary

Implements a comprehensive AI Personality system that supports both OpenAI and Google Gemini providers, enabling users to create reusable AI assistants with customizable behavior. Gemini provider includes content filtering sensitivity settings for safe content generation.

Features

Multi-Provider Support

  • OpenAI: Full support for GPT-4, GPT-3.5-turbo, and other chat models
  • Gemini: Complete integration with Google's Gemini models (gemini-1.5-pro, gemini-1.5-flash, etc.)
  • Extensible provider architecture for future additions

Gemini Sensitivity Configuration

Gemini provider includes granular content filtering controls with four categories:

  • Harassment, hate speech, sexual content, and dangerous content
  • Four sensitivity levels per category: none, low, medium, high
  • Maps directly to Gemini's safety threshold API

Streaming Output

Real-time text generation for both providers with progressive display. Users see responses as they're generated rather than waiting for completion.

Three New Commands

  1. Run AI with Personality… (run-ai-personality)

    • Opens searchable modal to select from available personality notes
    • Filters notes by note-type: ai-personality frontmatter
    • Processes selected text with chosen personality
  2. Re-run last Personality (rerun-last-ai-personality)

    • Quick access to most recently used personality
    • No modal required for faster workflow
  3. Use personality referenced by current note (use-referenced-personality)

    • Automatically uses personality from personality: path/to/note.md in current note's frontmatter
    • Enables note-specific AI assistants

Settings UI

New settings tab with security-first defaults:

  • Allow network requests toggle (default: OFF)
  • OpenAI API key input field
  • Gemini API key input field
  • Clear documentation of data usage and privacy

Provider Interface

All providers implement a consistent AIProvider interface supporting both streaming and non-streaming responses:

Security & Privacy

  • Network calls disabled by default, requiring explicit user opt-in
  • API keys stored securely in Obsidian's plugin data
  • No telemetry or hidden network requests
  • Data only sent when user explicitly runs a command
  • Clear error messages for all failure cases

Requires API keys from OpenAI and Google AI Studio for full testing.

Non-Goals (Future Work)

  • Templating variables in prompt bodies (deferred)
  • Mobile support (can be added incrementally)
  • Additional output targets beyond insert-below-cursor
  • In-place text editing

Details

  • Personality notes are identified by frontmatter note-type: ai-personality.
  • Each personality note should allow:
    • Provider selection: OpenAI or Gemini
    • Model-specific settings (e.g., sensitivity for Gemini, temperature for OpenAI)
    • Standard generation controls (maxTokens, streaming toggle, etc.)
  • Default output behavior: always insert response below cursor.
  • Streaming output should be supported for both providers, giving real-time feedback to the user.
  • Mobile support can be deferred for now.
  • Templating variables in prompt bodies are out of scope for MVP.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Gemini and OpenAI can be selected/configured in personality note frontmatter
  • Sensitivity setting is available for Gemini
  • Streaming response is supported for both
  • Insert-below-cursor output mode is default
  • Documentation updated to describe how to create an AI Personality note and configure providers/sensitivity

The method signature returns AsyncIterable<string> but the interface allows both Promise<string> and AsyncIterable<string>. The implementation should check the stream parameter and return the appropriate type, not always use async generator.

Same issue as OpenAI provider - the method always returns an async generator regardless of the stream parameter. Should conditionally return Promise for non-streaming requests.
