BYU LearningSuite Android App

Currently, BYU LearningSuite is only accessible via web browser. While it is true that most Android devices have internet browsers, it is also true that the LearningSuite website functions poorly on mobile devices. Thus, a LearningSuite App would be the perfect bridge: it would allow users to access LearningSuite information quickly and easily from anywhere without needing to be seated in front of a full-blown computer.

General App Overview

The app needs to display the information that a student user would normally see on the LearningSuite website. However, I would like the app to have the following attributes about it:

  • Simple
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to understand
  • Quick
  • Nice app appearance

The current LearningSuite website is clunky, complicated, and hard to use. The only reason we students use it is because we have to. I want this app to be so clean cut that students enjoy using the LearningSuite Android app and don't want to use it on their computers ever again.

I personally think that it isn't necessary to implement the "Teacher" view of LearningSuite in this app. Most teachers and TAs who use the LearningSuite website use it for data entry and manipulation, which would be much more tedious to do on an Android device than on a computer anyways.

Proposed LearningSuite app additional features

I believe that the following additional features will allow the app to really be an effective tool for students (unlike most other digital tools with the name LearningSuite branded on them). I think that they wouldn't take very much additional work to add into the LearningSuite app:

  • Upcoming assignments list: LearningSuite is horribly cluttered! You have to go to like five different pages to see what is due next class period. This app could cut the clutter and instead provide the student with a simple list of assignments that are coming up next. Additionally, it would be great if this list had several different views or could be sorted in several different ways (i.e., see when the next assignments are due just for one class, or see when the next assignments are due for all classes that the student has).

  • Marked as completed: When you have completed as assignment or quiz, it would be nice for the app to mark it as completed. This is a problem with the LearningSuite website: when you look at the assignments list or the quiz list, all it says is the name of the assignment or quiz. In order to find out if you've completed the assignment or not, you have to click on the item. This is a hassle that isn't necessary.

  • The app should give you notifications of upcoming assignments. For example, if an assignment is due in 12 hours, you should get a notification on your Android home screen. Notification settings should be adjustable, and should be turn-off-able if the user desires.

Conclusion

Overall, I want the LearningSuite Android app to provide BYU students with a much more comfortable and usable alternative to the LearningSuite website we have to put up with today.
