or the internet is wrong? (guess which way I voted) or how about this fox that hunts mice in my backyard:

call him or her? foxy the fox. or curlfox.. i don't know what this has to do with curling but why settle for an animal that tears up your yard or eats ants when we could have an animal that eats mice? it took me half an hour to figure out how to scale the transparent curl logo onto the fox in gimp (use the scaling tool, duh..). time well spent? #productive #foxes #hashtags

Whatever the name or mascot, I wouldn't redo the logo. It works.
The mascot in my opinion should be utilized as a presentational element in educational slides and videos. Something that matches with the name and what curl does. Here a fox could also mimic a dog so:

1. fetch
2. timeout (stay),
3. get
4. chase mail carrier (email)
5. eat mouse (cmd tool)
6. shake (handshake)
7. etc.
   Some AI generator can take an original vector illustration (maybe ones below by @centminmod) of whatever the mascot is to create clipart variations of it doing something relevant to that slide.

On submissions. An important point to note here is that anything AI generated (which no doubt there will be many) just like anything handmade needs to come with full specifications for license and rights.

Vector graphics would be a plus for usability.

I would go so far to call it a requirement.

• SVG version(s) - we live in a zoom world
• versions that work in few-color setups (perhaps with less detail)
• versions that work decently when very small
• all copyrights and other rights need to be under check and be given away without restrictions

Yes, it's important that it works well in small formats like icons or a small sized sticker. Something that is recognizable from a distance as well.

The hunt or the discussion is still alive to some level, yes. But don't let me trick you into doing work we might not end up using.

I believe we might just hold of making any decision on a mascot unless somehow magically a perfect one falls on us.
