GitHub styled heatmap graph

There is currently no GitHub styled heatmap graph showing releases per ISO week and weekday.

As discussed in this Mastodon thread I put together a PoC showing that you can create these GitHub styled heatmaps with gnuplot.

The scripts are in this gist with an example rendered graph based on releases.csv.

I haven’t checked the setup of other graphs in the curl project yet. But I could take a look and try to incorporate this one into the graph generation pipeline if wanted by the project.

It would be great to get this added to the collection!

If you check the Makefile you'll find the setup is like this:

1. The idea is to generate an SVG
2. Each SVG is made with gnuplot
3. Each SVG depends on a CSV file that gets generated, normally with a perl script but there's no reason we can't use awk

So feel free to give it a go. Let me know if you need my help somehow to get into the "framework".

Thanks for the walkthrough of the build system. And the prel. PR. The background looks nice.

You should have a Perl script to build the data csv - it would make it more consistent with the other parts of the repo. And I really don’t mind if the awk parts would be replaced. My Perl FU is not the best and awk was just faster for me to get the csv in place to then tinker on the more important gnuplot parts.

I looked at releases-per-year.pl - I guess it would be a good base for a corresponding heatmap one. I might give it a try with my limited Perl FU. But if you don’t want to wait I fully understand.
