Here is a draft of instructions for explaining the Lion to new AMIS translators. Be sure to add the login details.

AMIS localization is very easy to do and you don't need to be a programmer. It should take around 3-5 days to complete -- if it is easy to type in your language and if you have a DAISY recording booth and a fast internet connection, then it helps. We have a localization system set up which is called the DAISY Lion. Here is your new account information:

After you log in, you will see a list of tasks. You should complete each one. The order doesn't matter except in once case: you must translate strings, mnemonics, and keyboard shortcuts before you can download and record your prompts. Otherwise you can complete the tasks in any order. They are:

 Strings are words and phrases from the program, such as "Open", "Help", "Next section", etc.

 2. Assign keyboard shortcuts

 Keyboard shortcuts (aka accelerators) are key combinations that invoke a command without the user having to use the menu.  An example: "Ctrl + O" to open a file.

 Mnemonics are quick-access keyboard shortcuts to use once you are in a menu.  For example, go to the file menu with "Alt + F" and then press "x" to trigger the exit command. In this case, "x" is the mnemonic.  You may wish to choose mnemonics that make sense with your translation.  For example, in English, "O" is the mnemonic for "Open".  But in Spanish, "A" for "Abrir" would make more sense.

 Keyboard shortcuts and mnemonics have to be from the lowest common denominator set of keyboard keys; i.e. A-Z plus numbers, arrows, etc.  This way we can be sure that anyone using any computer can use them.  The DAISY Lion will ensure that your keyboard shortcuts and mnemonics conform to this rule, and it will also check to be sure there are no duplicate entries.

 4. Record your prompts 

Choose option A, B, or C.

A. Record using Obi and upload the data

Once you have completed steps 1, 2, and 3, you can get an HTML-formatted list of all the data you entered. You can import this into Obi and make a recording of everything. Follow the instructions from the DAISY Lion about getting Obi and completing this task.

B. Record each item individually and upload the data

If you are unable to use Obi or you have only a few items to record (as is the case when you're updating an existing translation), we suggest that you record the items individually and upload them on the website. You may have noticed that each translation item has a file upload box called "Choose an MP3 file". Record each translation item individually and upload the recording.

• • IMPORTANT** For this method ("B"), each file must have a unique filename.

C. Record using TTS

If you own a good quality speech synthesizer, you can generate the audio automatically via text-to-speech. If you want to choose this option, contact us for how to proceed after you have completed steps 1, 2, and 3 in this list.

 5. Download additional documents for translation (Help file and images)

 The help file for AMIS is a DAISY book.  You will need to translate the file and record a full-text, full-audio book using whatever method you prefer.  The book can be DAISY 2.02 or DAISY/NISO 2005. Send the book to me by email when you're done (or if it's too big, we can use our FTP site -- just let me know if you need the details when the time comes.)
