Add option to pick subtitle track for entire season of show

I think it would be neat to be able to set the desired subtitle track for an entire season of a show, if the same tracks are present across the entire season.

My specific use case is anime, where there will often be an English signs & songs track, along with a full track.

A better option would be to be able to choose a default subtitle type (ASS, SRT, DVD, etc.) and language to use for all videos, then fall back to whatever's available if the chosen type doesn't exist for a video. You could then possibly set a per-show or per-season override for those options. Changing the subtitle type or language while watching one episode should make that the default for that season and/or show going forward. It's certainly frustrating having to choose the correct subs each time I start an episode, especially if the default forces transcoding, but my preferred option doesn't.

While that does also sound good, it doesn’t fix my issue. In my case there’s often 2 English ASS tracks, one with only signs & songs, and one including dialogue.

How would this be determined between episodes? The track index? Or best guess based on flags?

Depending on your subtitle mode, right now the subtitle tracks are chosen based on preferred language and the default flag. I have been thinking about also including whether the user picked an SDH track as well.

Honestly not sure, there’s a reason why I’m using your client (very happy) instead of making my own.

The specific case I was thinking of is where a whole season might have the exact same options for all episodes. In this case I was thinking you’d just get a subtitle drop-down on the season, like you do with episodes.

This would be the most bullet proof method I think. If every episode has same order of tracks with the same languages and the same default/forced flags, maybe even checking names (usually Signs & Songs tracks are identified by name not flags).

I have to think about it more. Especially how to check this and integrate the logic somewhere.

It might not be exactly what this idea is pitching, but I think a simple priority whitelist/blacklist for keywords in the Settings menu would work. It would be global, and not based on individual seasons. But keywords in the whitelist get priority bumped +1, blacklist -1, highest score would be used as default.

Could then whitelist the word 'full', blacklist 'signs', etc. Would needs the lists to be csv to handle multiple keywords.

@wibuf it is not what I originally proposed but I think it sounds like a great solution.

It would tackle my original need, and be much more flexible for other uses. Awesome way to go about it IMO. I imagine it’s also simpler to implement.

@damontecres I built this out with the method I mentioned, using lists of keywords for priority. It fully works with my setup, tested on my Shield TV.

I wasn't sure the best spot for the new settings, it's two CSV lists, I put them in Settings > Advanced > Playback

Would you want this as a PR and put into Wholphin? If so, is there a better location for the Settings?
