Conditional styling of entries based on (sub)string match like in css attribute selectors

Similar to attribute selectors in css, is this on someone's plan to be able one day to style entries based on (sub)string match ?

For example,
I have a list of notes which is mixed with things to do prefixed by (_), and things done prefixed by (x) :

abc
def
(_) abc
(_) def
(x) abc
ghi
jkl
(x) mno

It'd be so nice to be able to do something like

message[text^="(_)"] { background: yellow; }

I was looking for -markup-rows option enabling pango rendering, some sed before rofi to add markup styling and another sed after to remove styling from selected string
