In case you didn't know, there's already the Hugo Version Manager hvm from Joe Mooring. Written in Go and feature-complete.

I didn't know that script. This script here though runs on Bash and does not need an API key for the Github part. That is a bit more raw, and can be applied before Golang is installed... which makes me think to link the extended version maybe I should add a check if Go is installed.

Yup, I've seen it's in Bash, which is why I explicitly mentioned hvm is written in Go. Which makes hvm dependency-free (you only need Golang installed if you'd like to compile the binary yourself) and more robust. Providing a GH API key (setting gitHubToken) is optional and gives you considerably higher rate limits.
