Unfortunately, the spies don't quite work, but there are debug prints added that demonstrate the issue.
Observe the change in the console -- "registering flow qf-0" is output only once. Same for qf-1, qf-2.

This is my attempt at solving #815. I tried to reproduce the issue in a test but I couldn't get the test to fail; instead, I output messages to the console where you can observe they are printed twice instead of once -- on the
secondfirst commit of the feature branch.
