AlterSend is now generally available. Send files directly between your devices — peer-to-peer, end-to-end encrypted, no accounts, no servers, no size limits.

Highlights

  • Cross-platform — native apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android
  • End-to-end encrypted — only your devices can read your files
  • No size limit — send a 5 MB photo or a 500 GB video archive, same flow
  • No accounts, no servers — pair two devices with a QR or join code, files transfer direct
  • Open source — Apache-2.0

How it works

  1. Open AlterSend on two devices
  2. One shows a join code (or QR)
  3. The other scans or types it
  4. Files transfer directly, peer-to-peer

Discovery uses Hyperswarm (DHT); transfers run over Hyperdrive — encrypted, content-addressed, resumable.

Known limitations

  • macOS DMGs are signed but not yet notarized — first-launch Gatekeeper warning requires right-click → Open. Notarization is in progress with Apple Developer Support
  • Windows .exe installer is unsigned — use the Microsoft Store link above for a signed build
  • Mobile receive only works while the app is open (iOS suspends background processes); desktop tray-mode is on the v2.0 roadmap
