Add Tabs for Repositories Instead of Dropdown #20026

Description

The feature request

Currently, GitHub Desktop requires users to switch between repositories using a dropdown menu. While functional, this workflow can be cumbersome when working with multiple repositories simultaneously. A tab-based interface (similar to browsers or code editors like VS Code) would improve efficiency by allowing users to quickly switch between repositories without opening the dropdown each time.

Proposed solution

  • Introduce tabs at the top of the UI, where each open repository is pinned as a separate tab.
  • Users can click on a tab to quickly switch between repositories.
  • Allow closing tabs (removing them from active view) and pinning frequently used repositories.
  • This would make multi-repo workflows significantly more efficient, especially for developers managing multiple projects.
