Fermentation & Aging Guide
After curing and cutting tobacco, it can be further refined using the Tobacco Barrel.
This system allows players to ferment and age tobacco, dramatically improving quality if done correctly.
Fermentation and aging simulate traditional tobacco processing and reward players who carefully control temperature, humidity, and storage conditions.
The Tobacco Barrel is used for two processes:
- Fermentation – warm and humid
- Aging – cool and dark
The barrel automatically switches modes depending on environmental conditions.
| Mode | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Fermenting | Develops flavor and boosts quality |
| Aging | Slowly refines tobacco over long periods |
Fermentation is the first barrel process.
It requires heat and humidity.
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Warmth | 3 or higher |
| Barrel Humidity | 25 or higher |
| Tobacco State | Not already fermented |
| Tobacco State | Not spoiled |
Humidity slowly builds inside the barrel based on the environment.
Humidity comes from nearby environmental factors:
- Water blocks
- Water cauldrons
- Humid biomes
- Enclosed cool storage areas
The barrel stores humidity internally until it reaches the fermentation threshold.
Fermentation requires nearby heat.
Heat can come from:
- Campfires
- Soul Campfires
- Flue Fireboxes
- Strong sunlight
Higher heat speeds humidity buildup.
Fermentation takes:
48,000 ticks (2 in-game days)
During fermentation, the barrel displays progress as a percentage.
When complete:
- Tobacco becomes Fermented
- Quality receives a +7 bonus
Fermented tobacco displays a gold “Fermented” tag in its tooltip.
Aging is a long-term process that slowly improves tobacco over time.
Unlike fermentation, aging has no fixed end.
Tobacco can age for days, months, or even years.
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Warmth | 0 or lower |
| Humidity | 1–3 |
| Light | 7 or lower |
| Sky Exposure | Must be enclosed |
These conditions simulate a cool cellar or storage room.
Good aging environments include:
- Underground rooms
- Stone cellars
- Enclosed dark storage areas
Helpful blocks:
- Blue Ice
- Packed Ice
- Ice
- Snow Blocks
- Water Cauldrons
Ice blocks lower temperature while water sources maintain slight humidity.
Aging progresses in in-game days.
| Aging Stage | Days |
|---|---|
| Fresh | 0–6 days |
| Light Aged | 7–29 days |
| Deep Aged | 30–89 days |
| Vintage | 90–364 days |
| Cellared | 365+ days |
The barrel displays age like:
