Troubleshooting
Common problems and what to try first.
Start here when something does not work. Each problem has a short fix. If the fix does not help, report the problem on the GitHub Issues page and include the logs described at the bottom of this page.
The IFS is the four-colour filament unit. It talks to the printer over a cable. If the cable comes loose, the printer keeps trying to connect again every 10 seconds. A short drop does not need a restart.
- Check the cable between the IFS and the printer. Make sure it is pushed in firmly at both ends.
- Wait about 30 seconds. The printer tries again by itself.
- If it still does not connect, switch the printer off and on again.
- If it is still not connected, read the message in the IFS panel. It shows the port and the reason. Send that message and the Klipper log in your report.

- With the stock system in the first slot, a Kiln OS start that fails lands back on stock after the next power cycle. This is normal, not a sign of a broken printer.
- If the install USB stick is still in, the stick is not run again. You will see "Not installed". Take the stick out, then use the retry marker or the
--retryoption. See Install. - The install log is saved on the stick, or at
/usr/data/ad5x/install/install.logover SSH.
The main Kiln OS system did not finish starting. The printer is now in the recovery system. This is safe. You can:
- Switch the printer off and on again to try the main system again.
- Use "Restore stock" on the touch screen to go back to the stock firmware. See Install.
- Install an update from the recovery system. See Updates.
- Wait at least 5 minutes after the update starts. The install takes about 3 minutes.
- Do not switch the printer off while the update is installing.
- If the printer does not come back, switch it off and on again. The recovery system takes over if the main system fails to start.
- The update log is at
/data/ad5x/kiln-update/agent.log.
This is expected. Kiln OS does not use the settings and config files from stock or zMod. Only the Z offset, the cutter and purge-box positions, the saved Wi-Fi networks and zMod's plugin choices came across. Run the setup wizard again on the touch screen. Keep your own changes in the local.cfg file.
- A slow USB Wi-Fi adapter can take up to 10 seconds to be ready at start. Wait a little after the printer starts before you check again.
- Check the network list on the touch screen under Settings, then Connection, then Network Settings. You can join a network or add a hidden one there.
- The Wi-Fi switch in the same menu turns Wi-Fi off. If you only use a network cable, you can leave it off.
- Send
logs/wifi.logfrom Fluidd's log files in your report. It does not contain passwords.
- Keep your finger steady when you press a button. A button that moves under your finger does not act.
- If the screen stops responding, switch the printer off and on again.
- Turn the sound on or off, or change the volume, in Settings, then Sound, then Printer Sounds.
- The speaker plays chimes for print events,
M300beeps and MIDI files. Turn it off there if you do not want any sound.
- Stock is saved on the printer under
/data/ad5x/stock. Check it withad5x-restore-stock --dry-runbefore you run the real command. - If the stock firmware is not what you expect afterwards, switch the printer off and on again. Stock sets its own boards back at its first start.
- What you were doing, and what you expected to happen.
- The Klipper log (
klippy.log) from Fluidd's log files. -
helixscreen.logfor touch screen problems. -
logs/wifi.logfor Wi-Fi problems. - The Kiln OS version, shown in Fluidd's update manager.
Do not include passwords, Wi-Fi keys or home network addresses.
