Better docs on workflow for adding GitFig to a file with variables already defined

If I have a file with one variable collection called Color that contains one color variable, based on the current documentation, I need to add a JSON file, e.g, tokens/color.json, into the repo before I can map the Color variable Collection to color.json.

But if I commit an empty color.json file to the repo, then open GitFig, I have to pull first before pushing the local Color collection. And by pulling I would expect that whatever is contained in the color.json would overwrite what I have locally.

So it feels like a chicken and egg problem. Am I doing something wrong?
