Guide to install this says to get the link for the apk file from releases to add to "downloader" problem is there is no apk file release. Has android been abandoned?

Where is this guide? I'm not seeing anything that mentions Downloader by name.
Android releases are plainly listed on the release assets page:

They are archived. You have to unpack them and get them onto the device yourself.

Honestly i had no idea you can install a tar.gz file, will test when i get home tomorrow. I am pushing on a bit and have only used .apk for android apps, havent done android development in a year or two.

You can't. They are archive files. The APK is inside them and you have to extract the it out first before you can install it.

Usually the ai results are spot on. I got to ask if they are apk files, why zip them? It would certainly be easier to have them as an apk file for end users. Not 100% sure how i will move the extracted apk file onto the firestick. Thats an issue for tomorrow though.

There's also this repo that has-the-ready to use extracted apks, and also my fork here that has that + an f-droid repo for auto updates.

I ended up writing a script to grab, extract and host the apk.
I do not get why the apk is archived in the release but some developers move in mysterious ways.

The full release APK without additional archiving and ABI splitting is 221.5MB vs 40.2MB with it.
