Scanning QR code fails on google-free phone

I've heard that the App does not work with google-free android. I am running Lineage 22.2 (Android 15) with MicroG and this does not seem to work either.

When trying to scan a QR code it fails with "Sending public RSA key failed".

I would like to be able to use the app without having to use any google services.

We already talked about this at eduMFA. The app uses Firebase for notification handling, which require Google Play Services. We discussed moving away from firebase (that would solve this issue), but we unfortunately didn't made a plan nor have a timeline yet.

I'll provide updates once we work on that.
