We can make things more streaming like in a couple more spots now, reducing the peak heap requirements further by materializing fewer lists and iterating more.

Another step in this, obviously still far more lists and retention than necessary here, but this saves some more heap and likely trivial (if even because CPU caches etc.) runtime overhead.
