How do I work with a non-point based SVG so I can have a Stroke around it?

Hey there my goal is to add a custom color to an svg and add a stroke around this. My idea of approaching this (maybe there's a better one) is to take the path of the svg, and apply the color and stroke to it. However the svg path is as follows:

So I extract the path but when I run it through, it gives me not a textual representation of an integer. This makes sense since the path is literally having letters in it to denote where to curve. So, what do I do to make this work? I'm very new to image handling so I'm stumped on how to convert this into an accurate point-based svg without losing the actual fidelity.

very reasonable question! The functions in Image.Shape aren't very mature - but equally they aren't intended to replace a full SVG feature set.

For your requirements just do Image.open("<svg width='54' height='86' version='1.1' xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'><path d='M1.5,27C1.5,14.5,12,1.5,27,1.5S52.5,14.5,52.5,27c0,9.5-7,18.5-13.5,28.5c-5,8-9.5,17-9.5,24.5c0,4-1.5,5-2.5,5s-2.5-1-2.5-5c0-7.5-4-16.5-9-24.5C9,45.5,1.5,36.5,1.5,27z' fill='#{color}'/></svg>") and you'll be returned {:ok, image} after which you can do whatever else you need to do.

I need to make the documentation clearer (second time this came up in the last week). And I'll add a Image.from_svg/1 to make it even more obvious.

I think the first question (in slack) was by me as well. If I go with your approach, I'm unsure how I'd add a white stroke around the svg. I was thinking about a simple resize, but it doesn't look right.

Also, I was also thinking about contributing by adding some examples for each function you have in the docs by referencing the tests you have. Would it be okay if I add some samples for each?

I'm no SVG expert but I think if you add a stroke attribute (and there are many others) that would be the way to add the border you're after.

Documentation, examples, livebooks - all would be very welcome indeed!

Glad you're back in business! SVG is truly amazing and the SVG parser in libvips is really fast so you shouldn't ever shy away from using it to generate an image. I use it that way, especially when I'm compositing images which is what I assume you are probably going to do with that marker.

I suggest become familiar with the viewport attribute of SVG too since that's a great way to generate the image with the dimensions you want without having to resize the path attribute.
