Migrating from distillery

Environment

• Elixir & Erlang/OTP versions (elixir --version): 1.9.4
• Operating system: https://hub.docker.com/r/bitwalker/alpine-elixir

Current behavior

Include code samples, errors and stacktraces if appropriate.

When starting the application the app crash with the error:

/opt/app/releases//elixir: exec: line 228: /opt/app/releases/../../erts-10.5.2/bin/erl: not found

I have found the root cause of the issue and was able to reproduce it.

In the mix.exs project version is based on git revision but because docker copied over the files their is an error
fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git and I guess version is then set to nil or "" without a "version" directory the relative path to erts is then wrong.

@steffenix So it doesn't work because the version in mix.exs is empty because git and/or the .git directory are not available inside a docker container? How did that work when using distillery?

I was using the option include_erts: false. That was my first attempt but I faced this issue #9570

@steffenix Not surr that will work but some ideas: You can make the docker builder step copy .git folder and install git. And in the mix.exs bake in the revision into a module attribute and read it from there, something like:

  @revision System.cmd("git", ["rev-parse", "--short", "HEAD"]) |> elem(0) |> String.trim_trailing()
...
      version: @revision,

I have hard coded the version and that solved the issue.
