The drivers you use either with a pre-made image or yourself can make all the difference between having a bootable machine or one that crashes at startup.

LIDO

A very common, useful 3rd party formatting utility compatible with most Macintoshes. The performance does suffer a bit on 030+ machines and it is recommended to use the Apple Drivers.

LIDO formatted drives are not compatible with the Macintosh Plus.

Apple

Apple drivers are very compatible but early versions of the Apple SC HD Setup require a patch and do a "low level" format that can take hours on a large drive.

Using Drive Setup on OS 7.1+ is recommended for 030 machines and above.

Lacie

Does work but does not seem to change any performance or compatibility over LIDO.

FWB Toolkit

Currently incompatible.
