R3D auto exposure with dynamic aperture control

Goal

Provide an optional auto-exposure mode for R3D recording that maintains exposure by smoothly adjusting aperture while ISO and shutter remain locked.

Why it matters

R3D workflows often protect intentional ISO and shutter choices. During changing light, aperture may be the practical variable, but abrupt or oscillating changes can ruin a shot.

Proposed experience

• Let the operator choose an exposure target from the clean image or metering data
• Define minimum and maximum aperture limits
• Adjust iris gradually with configurable response and damping
• Show when the target cannot be reached within the permitted range
• Suspend immediately on manual override, lens incompatibility, or unsafe camera state

Success looks like

During a continuous R3D take with changing light, the app holds the chosen exposure smoothly through aperture changes without hunting or overriding the operator's limits.

Open questions

• Which exposure signal should drive the controller?
• How should stepping lenses be smoothed or rate-limited?
• What failure and handoff behavior is safest during an active recording?
