Goal

Bring OpenZCine to Android with a native Jetpack Compose shell built on the shared Swift camera and business core where practical.

Why it matters

The monitor should not require changing mobile platforms. Android support also tests whether OpenZCine's shared protocol layer is genuinely portable and keeps the project open to a wider filmmaking community.

Proposed experience

• Native Android discovery, permissions, networking, lifecycle, rendering, and UI
• Reuse the portable camera protocol and business rules through a small, verified interop boundary
• Deliver core connection, live-view, record, control, and monitoring features in staged milestones
• Follow Android platform conventions instead of cloning the iOS interface
• Publish a device and OS compatibility matrix as hardware testing grows

Success looks like

A supported Android device can connect to a Nikon Z camera and deliver a stable, native-feeling OpenZCine monitor without maintaining a separate protocol implementation.

Open questions

• Which Android versions and GPU capabilities should define the first target?
• Is the Swift SDK for Android mature enough for the shared core boundary?
• Which feature subset makes the best first public Android beta?
