ESP sketch data upload doesn't respect IDE serial monitor

When programming the ESP, serial monitor is automatically closed. When running ESP sketch data upload, serial monitor causes upload to fail:

error: Failed to open COM11
error: espcomm_open failed
SPIFFS Upload failed!

We do not have access to the interface that commands the Serial Monitor from the plugin :(
