Fatal error when executing the git submodule command

I am trying to install the thread border router on the combo ESP32s3/esp32h2 module from espressif. When I execute the command 'git submodule update --init --depth 1', I get the following:
Aborting
fatal: Unable to checkout '36b14d3ef74f5e37e5be8902e1c1955a642fdfbf' in submodule path 'components/openthread/openthread'

Currently, if you switch from the esp-idf master branch to certain older branches and then run git submodule update --init --recursive, this issue can occur.

You can go to components/openthread/openthread, run rm -rf third_party/mbedtls and git checkout -- . to remove some extra files. Then return to the esp-idf/ directory and run git submodule update --init --recursive again.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try tomorrow and report back as to the outcome.
