The SoC has a watchdog and this firmware does not arm it. A new image that hangs before userspace is caught by the promotion gate; a board whose daemon dies after promotion stays dead until someone cuts its power. Arming the watchdog and pairing it with a boot counter closes the last gap where recovery means walking to the hardware.
