Change the current catch-all loader to use file-loader instead of url-loader, and exclude common image file extensions. Add another url-loader for images, configured identically to the original catch-all loader.

Part of issue #1293.

Testing

  1. Create a demo app with ./tasks/cra.sh my-app-test
  2. cd my-app-test
  3. Add a 1K PNG, a 50K PNG and a PDF to ./src
  4. Import each resource into App.js and include them in the page
import smallPicture from './small.png';
import largePicture from './large.png';
import someDoc from './someDoc.pdf';

// ...
<p><img src={smallPicture} alt="small" /></p>
<p><img src={largePicture} alt="large" /></p>
<p><a href={someDoc}>Here's a PDF</a></p>
  1. Start dev mode and check that:
    • The small image is embedded
    • The large image is referenced
    • The PDF is referenced
yarn start
  1. Build a production bundle:
yarn run build
  1. Check that the production build works as expected by serving it and browsing http://localhost/
docker run -it --rm -v $PWD/build:/usr/share/nginx/html -p 80:80 nginx:alpine

So the CI build failed because the test script expected an SVG in the CRA output, and now it's inlined into the 'build' output. I'd need to add a larger file to test the url-loader logic - are we happy for me to do that?

As far as I remember we wanted SVG to never be inlined because people might be using it for sprites. See #1153.

@Timer this is weird. The test failures were legitimate - I hadn't updated the tests to reflect the Webpack changes I'd made. What's strange is that they failed only on some of the node versions. Once I'd corrected the tests locally, they still always fail. However, the changes seem to work just find if I create a project and exercise them - I can see the expected output in the build directory, and a small PNG is inlined as expected. 😖 I might push the "fixed" tests and see what happens.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before? @gaearon?

I believe the text being imported is the behavior we want; not a link being generated to the file (the revised test behavior).
We can confirm this with @gaearon though.

Anyway, http://localhost:3001/static/media/.cb7eb057.pevJJykM1z/test-kitchensink/src/features/webpack/assets/aFileWithoutExt looks weird so me ... shouldn't that just be http://localhost:3001/static/media/aFileWithoutExt?

@Timer that's what I'm trying to check - the bundle behaviour has changed with these tests so that the content is never imported, only links to the content, just like the existing SVG test.

You can **`import` an image right in a JavaScript module**. This tells Webpack to include that image in the bundle. Unlike CSS imports, importing an image or a font gives you a string value. This value is the final image path you can reference in your code.

This makes me immediately think I'm going to get the content of the file. Let's say it gives you back a URL (as a string).

Might be able to reduce it a bit more, with something like:

Unlike CSS imports, importing a file returns a URL that can be used in your code, e.g. as the src attribute of an image or the href of a link to a PDF.

To reduce the number of requests to the server, importing images that are less than 10,000 bytes return a data URI instead of a path.
