Root Cause

The error Invalid content for node listItem: <heading("Structuring and organizing the context") is a ProseMirror schema validation error. It occurs when a heading node ends up as a child of a listItem node, which violates the schema.

The listItem node is defined in @tiptap/extension-list with content: "paragraph block*" — meaning the first child must be a paragraph, followed by zero or more block nodes. A heading node as the first child (or possibly any child depending on the block group definition) causes the schema check at NodeType.checkContent() in prosemirror-model to throw.

How It Happens

The most likely source is the AI-enhanced note generation pipeline:

1. The LLM generates markdown output via enhance-workflow.ts → streamText()
2. On success, enhance-success.ts calls md2json(text) to convert the LLM's markdown to TipTap JSON
3. The result is stored in TinyBase as enhanced_notes.content
4. EnhancedEditor (apps/desktop/src/session/components/note-input/enhanced/editor.tsx) loads this content via parseJsonContent() and passes it to the TipTap editor

The LLM sometimes produces markdown with headings inside list items, e.g.:

When @tiptap/markdown's MarkdownManager.parse() processes this, the listItem parseMarkdown handler calls helpers.parseChildren(token.tokens) on the list item's child tokens. If those tokens include a heading, the resulting JSON has a heading node inside listItem, which is invalid.

Secondary path: the same issue can occur when loading .md files from disk via apps/desktop/src/store/tinybase/persister/session/load/note.ts, which also calls md2json(markdownBody).

Where the Error Manifests

The stack trace shows the error fires during a React useEffect (commitHookEffectListMount), which corresponds to the effect in packages/tiptap/src/editor/index.tsx:227-250 where editor.commands.setContent() or editor.commands.markNewContent() is called when initialContent changes. This is where the invalid JSON is actually loaded into ProseMirror, triggering the schema validation.

Potential Approaches

1. Sanitize md2json output: Add a post-processing step in md2json() (in utils.ts) that walks the JSON tree and unwraps any heading nodes found inside listItem nodes — either lifting them out of the list or converting them to bold paragraphs. The existing sanitizeMarks() function already does a similar post-processing pass for code marks.

2. Validate before setting content: Use validateJsonContent() from schema-validation.ts before calling setContent() in the editor. If invalid, apply a sanitization pass or fall back to EMPTY_TIPTAP_DOC. The current isValidTiptapContent check only verifies type: "doc" + content array — it doesn't validate against the ProseMirror schema.

3. Wrap in try/catch at the editor level: The useEffect in editor/index.tsx:227-250 that calls setContent/markNewContent should catch schema validation errors gracefully instead of letting them propagate as unhandled exceptions.

4. Improve LLM prompt constraints: The system prompt already says "Use only h1 headers" and "bullet points for content", but LLMs can still produce headings inside list items. This is not a reliable fix on its own.

Option 1 (sanitizing md2json output) is likely the most robust approach since it handles both LLM-generated content and imported .md files.

Note

There are no existing test cases for headings inside list items in utils.test.ts. Adding such cases would help prevent regressions.
