Week 3 Progress Report

Week 3 focuses on transitioning from infrastructure setup to application-level development. This week, the project delivered a working C++ Student Information System (SIS) integrated with PostgreSQL, built via CMake, and verified by GitHub Actions CI.

Completed / In Progress Activities

Completed (Week 3)

  • Implemented C++ SIS core (menu-driven CRUD):
    • Add student
    • List students
    • Update student
    • Delete student
  • Added PostgreSQL schema initialization under db/init/ (students table + index).
  • Implemented validation layer (ID / email / required fields) and added unit tests.
  • Enabled CMake + CTest workflow and verified builds/tests in GitHub Actions CI.
  • Updated Docker Compose runtime to orchestrate:
    • sis_db (PostgreSQL) with healthcheck
    • sis_app (C++ app container)
  • Updated documentation:
    • README.md (project description + CI badge + Docker Hub links)
    • INSTALL.md (setup/run steps)
    • docs/week3-test-results.md (test results & notes)

In Progress / Next Improvements

  • Add/expand integration tests that run with PostgreSQL (planned for Week 4).
  • Improve demo flow and presentation readiness for Week 4.

Task Ownership

  • Student 3: C++ application core, database access (libpqxx), CRUD operations, unit tests.
  • Student 2: Dockerfile/compose execution updates, CI pipeline configuration and fixes.
  • Student 1: Documentation updates (README/INSTALL/docs), Wiki updates, progress reporting and review coordination.

Notes: Week 3 verification is based on unit tests (no external DB required for tests). DB-backed integration tests will be expanded in Week 4.

  • Add/extend integration tests with PostgreSQL container.
  • Prepare demo script + slides and ensure all members can present and answer Q&A.
  • Finalize Week 4 requirements and merge to main when ready.
