Poll: should v23 use Angular CDK Overlay to show the calendar?
#603
In v23 I would like to change how the calendar popup is placed on the page. Before I decide, I want your opinion, because it changes the dependencies of the library.
Today
The library has its own code to place the calendar under the input. It needs [appendToBody]="true" inside mat-form-field or a parent with overflow: hidden. The only dependencies are Angular and dayjs.
The idea: Angular CDK Overlay
CDK Overlay is the tool Angular Material uses for its own popups (datepicker, menu, select).
Good points:
the calendar is never cut by a parent, without any option;
better position when there is no space (it can flip up or to the side);
scroll and resize handled by code that is used and tested by many apps;
less custom code to maintain here.
Less good points:
@angular/cdk becomes a peer dependency. If you use Angular Material, you already have it. If you don't, you need to install it;
a small breaking change: appendToBody would not be needed anymore, and some custom CSS on .md-drppicker may need a small update.
Vote below. If you pick "Other", please explain in a comment. Comments are very welcome in any case: tell me if you use Angular Material or not, and what problems you have today with the position of the calendar.
The vote is open until 15 November 2026. I will post the result here and in the v23 roadmap.
