as discussed in #79, this script doesn't handle failure well and just continues/masks issues instead of aborting when something goes wrong. It should be refactored, such that exitstat is removed and instead the script exits immediately when something doesn't go according to plan.
Afterwards we should recheck the program still works as expected. It seems likely there's some latent problems hiding behind the current behaviour of the script, e.g. as seen in #79 (comment)
