screen flashing so much when turning the page

Hi i know i asked this already before but is there any way for the screen flashing to be lessen or like have an option to be turned off? i tested CrossInk to see if the same amount of flashing happens too but it's not and there's no ghosting as well despite having little to no page refresh...

Yeah that is the one! Can you help me confirm the setting you have for Refresh Frequency in Settings > Display? I think it is set to 1 which will refresh on every page turn, I have this on 15 and I have no problems with ghosting

i set it as 30 pages - there is no ghosting but my problem is it refreshes so much not just inside the book 😔

After tracing through the source code, I managed to fix the excessive flashing by patching the source and building a custom firmware. Here's what I found and changed:

Root cause

The flashing comes from several HALF_REFRESH calls added in 1.3.0.5 and expanded in 1.3.0.9. On my X4, these produces a very visible flash on every page turn and UI transition.

Files changed

src/activities/reader/ReaderUtils.h

• requestReaderUiTransitionRefresh() — removed the HALF_REFRESH queued when opening menus while reading
• displayWithRefreshCycle() — changed periodic full refresh from HALF_REFRESH to FAST_REFRESH

src/activities/apps/AchievementsActivity.cpp
src/activities/apps/ReadingStatsActivity.cpp
src/activities/apps/FlashcardsAppActivity.cpp
src/activities/apps/ReadingProfileActivity.cpp

• Restored onEnter()/onExit() refresh calls but changed from HALF_REFRESH to FAST_REFRESH

src/activities/apps/ReadingHeatmapActivity.cpp

• Changed displayBuffer(HALF_REFRESH) to FAST_REFRESH

src/activities/boot_sleep/SleepActivity.cpp

• displaySleepBuffer() — changed FULL_REFRESH to FAST_REFRESH

Result

Page turns are now smooth with no heavy flashing. The existing antiGhostingExperimental setting in ActivityManager still provides the heavier refresh cycle as an opt-in for users who want it.

Would be great to have this as an official option like maybe a setting to choose between FAST_REFRESH and HALF_REFRESH for UI transitions so users can pick their preference.

Let's see if @franssjz can take a look, I find it weird with your settings that it refreshes on every page turn
